Coffee Polymorphism
Genetic improvement of coffee, can particularly be triggered using molecular marker approaches. Molecular Breeding based on polymorphic DNA markers/techniques offers greaat possibilities to overcome the constraints in coffee improvement. In this context, we have intended to identify and exploit the largest possible number of polymorphic loci in cultivated species.
The approach
Coffee being the self pollinated crop, variability within the cultivated
species is extreemly low. Therefore careful selection of markers, which
can detect the available variation is of most crucial. For the purpose,
we have chosen Microsatellites (SSRs) and Retrotransposons as they are more abundent, specific and highly polymorphic.
